This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a "borderless world", cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market.

In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another.

In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world's major cities for "parts and attachments for hand-portable and fixed-system fire-extinguishing equipment excluding water sprinkler systems" for the year 2009. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales.

The Benefits of Portable Irrigation Systems

!±8± The Benefits of Portable Irrigation Systems

A portable irrigation system is the perfect choice for watering your nursery crops, vegetable gardens and more. This type of system comes in a variety of configurations and may have multiple zones to allow for individuality in watering for each type of plant. Some portable systems do not require a power source and may be adaptable for any water supply.

These units are most commonly made of light weight aluminum pipe and are often programmable to make your task easier. In fact, irrigation systems have been in use since 5,000 B.C. when Egyptians used the Nile River as a source of water for their crops.

The least expensive, and most common, type of portable irrigation system consists of portable sprinkler heads attached to a hose. This allows you to adjust water flow for different areas of your lawn and gardens.

Drawbacks include the need to move your sprinklers to different areas, the need to time how long the sprinklers are in use in each area to avoid watering too much and the need to make sure the entire area is uniformly watered.

With a sprinkler head and hose system, you must consider the needs of the entire landscape including your lawn, trees, flowers and vegetables.

The Yard Camel is a compact and portable irrigation system priced at only 9.95. This system features both multiple zones and timed watering in one little unit. No power source is needs for this system and you can adapt it to work with any water supply.

For days and weeks when you are unable to tend to your landscape, this unit will take over and ensure all watering is completed. Not only is the system automated, it is also programmable for times such as this. If you need to, multiple systems may be connected for all areas of your landscape.

A soaker hose is another type of portable irrigation system. Benefits of a soaker hose include the fact that it waters your landscape right at root level, leading to less evaporation and run off. Also, you can avoid watering areas such as sidewalks and driveways or the side of your house.

A Swan 1/2" Dia. X 25'L Soaker Hose, model LOUER12025FM, is priced at just .98 so multiple units may easily fit into your budget. Best of all, this particular model is made from 65% recycled tires which will also benefit our environment. A variety of portable systems are on the market today so there is sure to be one that is just right for you.
